J-Rock Fridays Vol. 69

April 20, 2012

Sexy time.

Turntable Films- “Misleading Interpretations”

Stabbed in the heart and he still makes it to the show on time! After their stellar debut mini-album, Turntable Films made it into my most anticipated for 2012 and “Misleading Interpretations” does not disappoint. It is sad though to see they’re a trio now, which must be a recent development as I can hear former keyboardist Nozomi Funada all over this track (I think she even has a cameo in this video?).

Chik’nhood

April 18, 2012

myspace band of the week

Chik’nhood was hatched in 2008 in Tokyo. Syuji (guitar), Manabu (drums) and Tsuchihashi (bass) were originally in a band called Jam Band. They met their vocalist Hiro, who grew up in Manila, and formed Chik’nhood, a parody of the delicious restaurant El Pollo Loco. They are influenced by American alternative rock acts like Foo Fighters and Hoobastank. Their self-titled album was released in 2010.

Chik’nhood’s debut album is available at CD Japan and digitally on Amazon and iTunes. They have also put up a bunch of new tracks for free download on their bandcamp.

J-Rock Fridays Vol. 68

April 6, 2012

Okay, the Hunger Games gag didn’t bring in any new readers so I’ll drop the act for now. I think Bertoia won?

ar- “Akasaka Nice Day”

Looks like ar added a guitarist…and autotune? since the last time we saw them. Not the kind of band I expected to turn to dance rock but it’s growing on me.

FU えふゆー

April 4, 2012

myspace band of the week

FU えふゆー prononced “efju” is a rock trio from Tokyo. They formed in 2002 with the lineup Ubi Quitous (vocal, guitar), Tekere Two (bass), Chang (keyboard ~2010) and T*K (drums). They have released four albums, their third Love I Love was produced by Grammy-award winning Malcolm Burn. “On No Words” from that album was a finalist in the 12th Annual Great American Song Contest. In April 2010, FU began hosting a monthly net radio show Izigen Ongaku Tankentai at Tokyo Net Radio. FU is short for “from unconsciousness” which is fitting since frontman Quitous claims most of FU’s songs are written in his dreams.

FU MP3s are available at Amazon and iTunes. CDs are available at CD Baby.
