J-Rock Fridays Vol. 74

June 29, 2012

Fourteen new videos for your viewing pleasure. Pick a favorite or two.

toe- “Tsuki, Kake feat. ACO”

Since the official version looks awful, here’s the viral video where they pretend to be a cover band covering their own song before it was even released. As you can tell from the “feat. ACO” bit, this is one of their vocal tracks, which have been better than their instrumentals as of late.

Riot Dance Party

June 20, 2012

myspace band of the week

Riot Dance Party may think J-Rock is dead, but they’re just going to have to deal with some J-Rock Explosion love. This two-man band, Hiro (vocals, bass, programming) and Tsuyoshi (drums), comes from Osaka. Their music is a mix of everything: funk, samba, reggae, but mostly rock and punk. They have toured with a lot of overseas bands and toured in Australia a few years ago.

Download Riot Dance Party latest EP Life or Death at Amazon or CD Baby.

J-Rock Classic: Tahj Mowry Kicks It with Boom Boom Satellites

June 20, 2012

In honor of  Tahj Mowry’s return to sitcom television tonight, let’s take a look at the Smart Guy’s brief stint as a rapper in a collaboration with J-Rock legends Boom Boom Satellites.

“Kick It Out” was originally released on Boom Boom Satellites’ On album back in 2006. In 2009 Timbaland Productions contacted BBS and set up the collaboration with rappers Flo Rida and newcomer Tahj Mowry of Smart Guy and Full House fame. The collaboration was used by Sony to give Boom Boom Satellites a push in the American market, which was mostly a failure asides from a few tour dates and a best of compilation. Mowry’s musical career sunk as well, turning back to acting, although you could hear him sing some Adele songs on YouTube.

But back to the video, this version of “Kick It Out” keeps the original’s chorus with a new verse from BBS. Mowry takes the intro to the song but spends most of the video as a dancer leading some weird Step Up tribute. Flo Rida himself only shows up as a hologram on stage with BBS (two years before Tupac played Coachella!). Not as good as the original, but a commendable effort to launch these two artists careers in the west.

“Kick It Out” was available as a single on iTunes, but has since disappeared. Feel free to share all your favorite Smart Guy moments or Baby Daddy impressions in the replies!

J-Rock Fridays Vol. 73

June 15, 2012

Here we go!

NILE LONG- “See Your Eyes”

It was a sad day when The Brixton Academy quietly announced their disbandment earlier this year. Thankfully, it didn’t last long as most of the members announced they’d be back in Nile Long. “See Your Eyes” continues where TBA’s last EP L.O.T. left off, with an infectious melody and dance grooves.

talk

June 13, 2012

myspace band of the week

Talk is Kensei Ogata (guitar, vocal), Yuriko Takahashi (guitar, vocal), Jun Kawamoto (guitar), Hitomi Takakura (keyboard), Shirou Murakami (bass) and Takuma Nishimura (drums). The band formed as a three-piece in March 2009 in Kumamoto. Their debut Waltz For Feebee was self-released in 2011 and sold out quickly. Dead Funny Records re-released it earlier this year with three new tracks.  Not only does talk combine shoegaze with catchy twee melodies but also devotes half their debut to solid post-rock tunes.

Waltz For Feebee is available at CD Japan and Amazon MP3. Grab a couple free tracks at their bandcamp to try.
