Best of 2012: J-Rock Fridays Part II

January 18, 2013

The last batch of the best J-Rock videos of 2012, although hopefully not the last list of the year. We’ve been to many places this year and it’s time to revisit.

The Novembers- “Harem”

Starting off part II of the best J-Rock videos of 2012 is another “weird stuff happens in the woods” video! The Novembers’ follow a mysterious gypsy into the woods where she does a sword dance while they look on like Twilight vampires. Haunting!

Aureole- “Live Again”

I really do love these woods videos! This time a mysterious schoolgirl stumbles into the woods and finds a magic sword while Aureole plays their flute song behind a bed sheet. She will protect them from harm.

matryoshka- “Monotonous Purgatory”

A beautiful animated video about a soul leaving its body that could have probably been expanded to a short film and submitted to certain film festivals. A wonderful treat for the 5 year album wait.

J-Rock Fridays Vol. 83

November 2, 2012

It’s here!

The Novembers- “Harem”

What better way to start the month of November than with a brand new PV from The Novembers? Another solid shoegazy track from the band and a cool video with a dancing gypsy while the boys admire and give their best Twilight poses in the woods.

Czecho No Republic- “Ivory”

CNR’s korg is set to accordion, which gives “Ivory” a cozy, wintery feel. They also have a new band member who shakes a tambourine and just stands around looking pretty. Eye candy!

Yutaka Furukawa- “Beast”

Doping Panda was epic dance rock, but now that they’re broken up frontman Yutaka Furukawa is rocking with multiple versions of himself. Because this sounds like just another fun Doping Panda single, we’re excited for his solo album due out next year.

world’s end girlfriend starts his own label, fills it with awesome

July 13, 2010

In light of fellow post-rockers LITE and toe forming their own record labels, Katsuhiko Maeda (world’s end girlfriend) announced his own label Virgin Babylon Records today.  And what an amazing roster it has.  So far he’s signed mutyumu, about tess, matryoshka, and his brother Ryoma Maeda.  If that’s not a who’s who in amazing Japanese post-rock I don’t know what else is.  About tess will release their new album Winter 2010 and Ryoma Maeda in Spring 2011.

The first release on Virgin Babylon Records will of course be the new world’s end girlfriend album Seven Idiots on September 14.  He describes it as “an irregular pop album, filled with ‘Destroy’ and ‘Construction,’ ‘LOVE’ and ‘Twisted’ of pop music!”  Track listing and album info can be found here.  The first single “Les Enfants du Paradis” can be downloaded for free.   It’s a lot more bouncy than I expected.  And I never thought I’d hear a world’s end girlfriend song start with handclaps.
