Arbus

arbus

Arbus is a hardcore/math rock band from Kyoto that formed in March 2008. The current band members are Shohei Ikezumi (guitar), Ryosuke Fujita (guitar), Hayato Bo (bass) and Ryotaro Nishida (drums). Vocalist Yuzuru Shimamura left the band in December and they are currently on hiatus. They released their first demo in 2009 called With Your Perfection and their first mini-album A Recess in the Wall in 2010. Last summer they released a split EP with bilo’u.

Based in San Francisco, akai SKY is California’s leading J-Rock band blending heavy American rock with Japanese vocals. Hayashi (guitar) and Umi (bass) formed akai SKY in 2005 with Ryuusei (vocals) and Jinra (drums) completing the band in 2008. The band has played at dozens of anime conventions and festivals in America. They self-released their first EP Tokyo Beat Riot in 2010 and contributed a cover of “Daybreak’s Bell” to a L’arc~en~ciel tribute album in 2012. Their second EP Heart, Attack! was released today. Totos is a folk/powerpop band from Tokyo. Vocalist Koyo Fukamizu of Brokenspace started totos as a solo project in 2001. After recording a home demo, he was offered a gig and gathered four people to form a full band. Today’s lineup is Koyo Fukamizu (vocals, guitar), Kenji Tamura (guitar), U-co Muto (vocals, guitar), Osamu Watanabe (bass) and Hara “GEN” Hideki (drums). They were signed by popular powerpop label Thistime Records in 2006 who released their first mini-album in 2007 and their first album Roommate in 2008. After the release of Super Shoes in 2010, totos went on hiatus, but recently resumed activities.

Roommate is available at CD Baby and CD Japan and you can buy all their albums digitally at totos’ bandcamp. In February they released an EP Everything as 7″ record and it’s available at Jet Set Records.

Saisa is a post rock/shoegaze band from Tokyo that formed in 2009. The three-man band consists of Kaoru Yanagi, Noriyuki Kasahara and Hiromi Tsuchiyama. Although there are sometimes vocals, they mainly act as an instrument of their own and melt into saisa’s atmospheric sounds. Their first EP This Empty Space Returns Your Solitude was released in November from the Wisconsin based label Keep It Together Records. You can buy it on cassette here or listen to it at bandcamp

Jake stone garage is an alternative rock band from Sapporo that formed in 2002. Satoshi Watanabe (vocals, guitar) is the only original member with Tsukasa Nishi (bass) joining in 2004 and Hideaki Iwanaka (drums) in 2011. They have released three mini-albums under A-CUE Records and a full album Rocks in 2011. Their latest mini-album Feels and their full length is available at CD Japan. Go see them live in America at SXSW and this year’s Japan Nite tour.

mori wa ikiteiru

Mori wa ikiteiru is a folk band from Tokyo that formed in April 2012. Okada Takuro (guitar, pedal steel, mandolin, banjo) started the band as an ambient project, as evidenced by the solo track on their myspace page. Eventually, mori wa ikiteiru became a full band that was more influenced by classic rock and folk music. The full lineup includes Takekawa Satoshi (vocal, guitar, bass, synth, percussion), Taniguchi Yu (piano, wurlitzer, organ, accordion), Kuyama Naomichi (bass, guitar, piano), Ookubo Junya (sax, flute, trumpet) and Masumura Kazuhiko (drums).

Their first CD-R Foam of the Daze was released in December and is available at Jet Set Records. You can listen to the first two tracks on SoundCloud.

You Said Something

You Said Something is a lo-fi indie pop band from Sapporo. The trio, Kousuke Sakurai (vocals, guitar), Saya Yamada (bass, metallophone) and Kouichiro Sawaya (drums), formed in March 2011. Their self-titled EP was released last October and is available at Jet Set Records. They recently contributed the track “Sunshine” to Ano(t)raks new compilation Upwards and Onwards.

Tokyo Shoegazer (東京酒吐座) is exactly what it sounds like, a shoegaze band from Tokyo. Formed in 2010, the band was created for Plastic Tree’s former drummer’s Sasabuchi Hiroshi’s birthday event. The supergroup of sorts includes Presence of soul’s Yoshi (vocals, guitar), koldcake’s Kiyomi Watanabe (guitar), Zeppet Store’s Makoto Gomi (guitar), 101A’s “the k” (bass) and Sasabuchi (drums). Although they intended to disband after one performance, they decided to continue activities after many offers to perform again.

Their first album Crystallize was released in 2011 and is available at CD Japan. On January 23 they released a split EP with with former band of the week Lemon’s Chair and contributed two tracks to the Japanese My Bloody Valentine tribute album Yellow Loveless.

Goodbye holiday

Goodbye holiday is a four piece rock band that formed in Hiroshima in 2008. Kodama (vocals), Omori (guitar), Fukuyama (bass) and Yamasaki (drums) moved activities to Tokyo in 2011. They released a demo album that year that eventually became their first mini-album. Solaris was released in January from No Big Deal Records and is available at CD Japan.

sleepwarp

Sleep warp is an indie pop band that formed in 2003. Its current members are Rumi (vocals), Kazuto Tabata (guitar) and Ryoichi (bass). They released their first album Terminal in 2004 and thanks to the Beat Crusaders, four songs from the album were used as inserts in the anime BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Their second album Quest For This Velvety World was released in 2006 and received some critical praise in the UK and US. Their fifth album Strange Torchlight was released on December 12.
