Best of 2011: Collaborations

February 8, 2012

Slowly plowing through the year end lists, here’s our favorite collaborations and supergroups of 2011.

AA=AiD- “We’re not alone”

After the natural disasters of 2011, it was cool to see all the “pray for Japan” benefit tracks and compilations that cropped up on the internet from all over the world. AA=AiD is a project led by Takeshi Ueda (AA=) that recorded this song to encourage reconstruction efforts. “We’re not alone” is a veritable who’s who of J-Rock and features Hayashi (Polysics), Shinichi Ubukata (Nothing’s Carved In Stone) and Akihiro Namba (Hi-STANDARD) among many others. You can download it for free here.

Kenzi Masubuchi’s Punk Ska Unity did much the same but with even more punk/ska artists.

Posthumous Nujabes: Luv(sic) Part 4

June 22, 2011

In case you missed it, a new Nujabes song was released earlier this month. Shing02 returns for part 4 in the Luv(sic) series. DJ Icewater and Uyama Hiroto help out with scratches and sax. I don’t know the story behind this track, whether Nujabes intended for this beat to be used for Luv(sic) or if Shingo just picked it out of hat. In any case, it’s out and it’s great. Even NPR digs it. The track is available on iTunes and at Hydeout Productions (with an A cappella and instrumental version). A vinyl release will be out in July.

In related news, Word Is Bond released the An Eternal Soul OST today. It’s the official soundtrack for the Nujabes documentary directed by Abe Spiegel. You can download it for free at bandcamp. Songs from Ruto, Dela, Ahnnu and Marcus D are below.

Posthumous Nujabes: Homeward Journey

August 31, 2010

The first of Nujabes’ unreleased work has hit the internet.  The appropriately titled “Homeward Journey” is a collaboration with fellow Hyde Out Productions artist Uyama Hiroto.  The song was released on a 12″ record with two other versions.  There are plans to release an album of unfinished work later this year or 2011.  Talk to this guy if you want to take part in the Nujabes documentary.

toe pays tribute to Nujabes

August 1, 2010

Here’s a clip of toe performing “Reflection Eternal” at Kaikoo Popwave Festival 2010 a  few weeks after Nujabes’ death was announced.  In true post-rock fashion, toe removed all the vocals and threw in some Spanish guitar without taking away the emotional impact of the song.  Rest in peace.
