J-Rock Fridays Vol. 98

May 31, 2013

Pirates, astronauts, pizza, oh my!

Comeback My Daughters- “Alone in the Dark”

The boys of Comeback My Daughters are back in NYC recording their major label debut for Columbia. Look familiar? That’s because they reshot the exact same scenes in the exact same locations as their for video “Why” in reverse order. New hairdos, great new song.

DQS- “Rescue featuring Kondo Tomohiro”

How many drummers does one band need? This supergroup has 10, plus a guitarist, bassist and keyboardist, all from bands I’ve posted about before that I’m not listing off here. Of course, it kind of takes the wind out of DQS’ sails when only 4 of them show up to film a PV that mainly features their special guest vocalist, but I’m sure it’s amazing when they all perform live!

The Cherry Coke$- “Drunken Pirate”

A little late for St. Paddy’s Day, but The Cherry Coke$’s swarmy pirate theme has finally been realized. Grab your accordions and flutes and join them at the Jolly Roger.

J-Rock Fridays Vol. 85

November 30, 2012

Raining down a new bunch of J-Rock videos. Just FYI, this is the time of year my part-time job becomes a full-time crap fest so don’t be too worried if I disappear for a while!

Shugo Tokumaru- “Decorate”

Finally! P-Vine has been region blocking this video for months, but now we have a viewable upload thanks to Polyvinyl announcing they’ll be releasing Shugo Tokumaru’s new album In Focus? in the states in January. “Decorate” continues what Tokumaru does best, bedroom pop with a mix of childlike wonder.

Magdala- “Memories”

If you’ve been missing mutyumu, hatis noit has a new project with Aureole frontman Daichi Mori. She drops the operatic voice for Magdala, substituting her universally beautiful voice. Sure I miss the random screaming in the background but this is pretty too.

LOST- “Christmas Eve (English Version)”

It’s Christmas time, again, and LOST recorded a non screamy cover of Tatsuro Yamashita’s “Christmas Eve.” You can find it on Santa Causes: It’s A Pop Rock Christmas, which I can only hope is a continuation of this awesome CD,  with a bunch of other mostly Japanese artists.

LOST

January 18, 2010

myspace band of the week

Hardcore band LOST originally formed in 2000 and has been plagued by several lineup changes since, with guitarist Yoshimi Morinaga being the only original member left.  In 2008, their lead singer and two other members left the band.  This would’ve been the final nail in the coffin for most bands, but the remaining members quickly filled in the lineup with Hiroki Nakamori from Ikusa Fire on vocals.

Although the band has released an album in 2004 and a mini-album in 2007, the current lineup has only released a handful of songs on compilations.  Among these are a track on Take 5’s hitori*anchuu and two tracks on a three-way split album with Nature Living and Evylock.  LOST are currently recording their new album.
