J-Rock Fridays Vol. 87

December 28, 2012

The last J-Rock Fridays of 2012! Just because the year is ending doesn’t mean Japan has slowed down their music video production.

miila- “Santa Baby”

Is it too late for Christmas songs? Oh well, I was never in the holiday spirit to begin with. Not the cheeriest version of the song anyway. This cover is actually a couple of years old, but I’m glad miila (from Miila and the Geeks) got around to making a video for it.

Sawao Yamanaka- “Answer”

Can you believe Yamanaka’s on his third solo album already? Just like his other side project The Predators, I can’t differentiate “Answer” from a standard pillows track. That’s great if you’re a fan of the pillows, but I would like to see him do something different for a change. This is his chance to do something new and he blew it again.

DOLLS$BOXX- “Loud Twin Stars”

DOLL$BOXX is Fuki from Light Bringer and all of the gals from Gacharic Spin. Although their other single and individual projects lean towards girly pop rock, Gacharic Spin’s keyboardist spends half of “Loud Twin Stars” screaming and it’s awesome.

There’s a lot to go through this week so let’s! get! it! started!

THE Dakishimeruzu- “I wanna be your boyfriend”

THE Dakishimeruzu is not afraid to thrash around in the mud. Let’s just get dirty and have fun. Their second album was released last November, so this extra long PV is a good reminder to check it out.

Miila and the Geeks

August 31, 2011

myspace band of the week

One of the more exciting up and coming bands I haven’t featured on this column yet is Miila and the Geeks. Miila was originally the solo project of guitarist/bassist/vocalist Moe Wadaka, who is also a member of Twee Grrrls Club and the duo Love and Hates with HNC’s Yuppa. The project was expanded to a band in 2007 with the addition of drummer Kaoru Ajima and Ryota Komori on screaming sax. Their first 7″ EP 6 Songs was released in December 2010 and sold out in a few days as did their second EP 3 Songs earlier this summer. Their debut album New Age was released by Niw! Records last week.

Miila and the Geeks is associated with the “riot grrrl” movement of the 1990s. They list PJ Harvey, Bikini Kill and Kim Gordon among their influences. “Want,” “Cigarette & Water” and “Super Hero” are simple, yet aggressive punk songs punctuated by some crazy awesome saxophone. The sax is back in “Trouble,” which isn’t as fast but is still catchy with it’s one-line lyric.

New Age is available from Jet Set Records.

J-Rock Fridays Vol. 51

August 5, 2011

Not going to Lollapalooza this weekend edition.

Miila and the Geeks- “Superhero”

Miila and the Geeks filmed an impromptu video while in Austin for SXSW this year. Looks like they didn’t bother to edit the video or inform their neighbor but screaming sax saves the day again. “Superhero” was originally released on their sold out 6 Songs EP last year, but you can catch it again on their debut album New Age later this month.

New Miila and the Geeks 7″

July 6, 2011

As promised, Miila and the Geeks new EP has a release date. 3 Songs, the followup to 6 Songs, will be released on July 20 from Niw! Records. Side A includes “New Age” and “Mind Your Own Business” while side B features a remix of “Worst Words.” Preorder the EP now at Jet Set Records.

“New Age” lacks the punch in your face from 6 Songs but still has a great retro feel. Like the theme to some old black and white noir film. The video features Moe walking on a beach but I’m picturing a seedy nightclub with cigar smoke wafting upstage. Watch a live clip of “Worst Words” below (no sax).

Wednesday Live: miila and the geeks @ One

February 9, 2011

Miila and the Geeks is Miila of Love and Hates and her two friends on drums and screaming sax. These are three songs that they performed live at One Koenji in Tokyo. It’s supposed to be some kind of bar but those curtains and lamps more resemble a funeral home to me. Regardless that’s some amazing saxophone work.

“Cigarette & Water, “You Don’t Lier,” “Super Hero” come from their 6 Songs 7″ + CD-R.
