Beatful

April 20, 2011

myspace band of the week

Beatful is an electronic rock band that formed in 2008. Vocalist Miyuki joined the band May 2009 after a series of auditions. Their original keyboardist left in August 2009 and was replaced by Akio. Beatful incorporates synthesizers with dance rhythms, “a horror movie with catchy pop rock and roll.”

At this time their myspace only includes live clips. Most of their  songs lean towards the anime side of J-pop but the keyboardist keeps things interesting. Beatful are currently recording their first album. ORGASMLiveNet uploaded a video of their performance of two new songs “Aa Ha Wa” and “Jet” a few days ago. I got to say I’m getting major Tokyo Jihen vibes from this. Miyuki is definitely exuding Shiina Ringo spunk, especially with the new haircut. These songs are a lot of fun and I can’t wait to hear more.

MotherMAN

April 13, 2011

myspace band of the week

MotherMAN is an unsigned band from Tokyo. Before I say anything else I should address the elephant in the room. After the meatspin wars of 2006 I thought my days of shock sites were over. Until I Googled this band’s name. To spare your curiosity, motherman.com shows a video of a dude getting anal and oral from a pair of transvestites. Cocks all over the place.

It’s a shame I have to associate MotherMAN with dick now since  I can see them being the next big mainstream rock band. Most of MotherMAN’s songs are the easy going, maybe ballad kind. The vocals are very pleasant and the guitars dreamy. I wouldn’t quite call it shoegaze but if that’s what they want to call it. They do have an epic post rock vibe in “Peaceland” though. MotherMAN is a good pop rock band comparable to bands like UNCHAIN and the equally bad named Bump of Chicken.

MotherMAN CDs are only available at their shows. If you’d like some free music they have a zip file with two songs on their website.

Sentinels

April 6, 2011

myspace band of the week

Sentinels! No worries, this has nothing to do with giant mutant-hunting robots. Sentinels is an “east meets west, west meets east” band centered in Osaka. UK native Matt Wycliffe Lucas landed in Japan in 2005 where he taught at a language school. He met future keyboardist Lito Cruz his first day and they became fast friends. Two years later Cruz and Wycliffe  had to come up with a song-to-sing-along-to for their students and magic happened. The two booked a rehearsal in Osaka’s red light district and worked on Wycliffe’s material.

Wycliffe met their bassist Maki at school. Somehow she was only student left in class and instead of talking about “business trips” they decided to meet at a coffee house and talk music. Maki was exclusively a guitarist but Wycliffe convinced her to pick up the bass and join his band. Lito met their drummer Atsuko at a subway station. She bumped him and he noticed the drumsticks sticking out of her handbag. Delighted to find a drummer, he invited her to rehearsal.

The three songs on myspace come from their demo CD available from Flake Records. “Telescopic” is a great piano driven song. One thing that is kind of surprising is the Claudio Sanchez quiver in Wycliffe’s vocals, which is even more apparent in “People Are Everywhere.” I’m not accustomed to hearing that quiver in happy music. But that didn’t stop me from singing along “oh oh oh I’m a doctor.” The last song “The Wa and the Wherefore” ends on a more melancholic, leaves changing note. Sentinels is an upbeat band with an international back story. The vocals may turn some people off but there’s definitely some good stuff here.

Himawari Batake

March 29, 2011

myspace band of the week

Himawari Batake (ひまわり畑) is an indie rock trio. All I get when I Google their name is a lot of sunflower pictures so I’ll have to forego the usual bio paragraph.

For a band whose name translates to “sunflower field,” Himawari Batake rocks pretty hard. Not to say they’re mosh pit heavy, but they’ve got a good hipster head bob going on. おはよう (Good Morning) is a catchy song and I’m happy to say I knew what “ohayou” meant before plugging it into the translator (I know some Japanese words!). They have another song that they named after themselves. It doesn’t evoke sunflowers but it builds on the energy of their previous song. 月夜 stands out as they cut out the noise to focus on guitar work. The “GF version” is equally brilliant. If they focus on developing the sound of these last two tracks they’ll be a force to reckon with some day.

Vampillia

March 22, 2011

myspace band of the week

Vampillia is a 10-piece “brutal orchestra” that dubbed themselves the hardcore version of Arcade Fire. Members of the orchestra have included Toyohito Yoshikawa (ex Boredoms), Kazuhisa Chikada (World’s End Girlfriend), and Merzbow. But the main members are their three vocalists: Geath (the screamer), Death (the Mongoloid woodcutter), and OPERA (the opera singer).

They toured New York with Tujiko Noriko in 2008 and made a stop at SXSW this year. In 2010 they toured Australia to all sold-out shows. Is Collage Collective released their first album Sppears late 2009 in Japan. US label Important Records released their next album Alchemic Heart January 2011. This album is a collaboration with Jarboe, Inswarm, and Merzbow and contains two 25-minute songs. Their next album Rule the World + Deathtiny Land will be released this April from Italian label code666. This album will contain 24 songs and last 24 minutes.

Vampillia’s sound is a mix of classical and hardcore music. The combination of screaming and opera in songs like “heyoah” calls to mind bands like mutyumu. “Sea” from Alchemic Heart only gets a 3-minute mix on myspace but that’s enough to get the gist of it. This song has much more in common the post-rock/doom genre than anything on Sppears. “Mersum” with vocals by Tujiko Noriko sounds a bit out of place but it’s a beautiful piece amongst chaos.

Buy Alchemic Heart and Sppears at Amazon.

Kaisoku Tokyo

March 15, 2011

myspace band of the week

Last week a lot of people came to this blog looking for Kaisoku Toukyou. It looks like they’ve changed the romanization of their name to Kaisoku Tokyo since I posted their video on J-Rock Fridays, but at least the name makes sense now. So for shattering my busiest day record I shall grant you band of the week.

Kaisoku Tokyo (快速東京) naturally comes from Tokyo. The four members met as students at Tokyo’s Tama Art University in 2008. They played shows in Kichijoji and made their first big appearance at Fuji Rock Festival in 2010. Their first album Music Station came out January 2011.

There’s four songs on Kaisoku Tokyo’s myspace and they average a minute. Their hard and fast style will lump them in the hardcore punk genre, but according to this Japan Times article they don’t consider themselves hardcore. “To the bitter end we’re a rock and pop band. It’s just that we’re fast and noisy” says vocalist vocalist Tetsumaru Fukuda. Whatever they want to call it, it’s fun to listen to.

Buy Music Station at CD Japan or Play-Asia.

JOSY

March 8, 2011

myspace band of the week

She brings me Mexican food from Sombrero’s just because. Yeah, just be-whoops wrong Josie.

JOSY is an all-girl rock band from Tokyo.  They formed in the spring of 2010. Their first single “The Ugly Duckling” went on sale February 2011. You’ll be able to see them live in the USA on this year’s Japan Nite tour.

One thing JOSY doesn’t have that most bands do is a guitarist. But that’s OK. Their keyboardist keeps things funky. JOSY has three songs available on myspace, which appears to be everything they’ve recorded. “The Ugly Duckling” is more pop oriented, with an inspirational English chorus, while “Selfish” is a little more aggressive. “Loopy” takes JOSY to a more Bohemian direction, similar to last year’s all-girl buzz band The Suzan. JOSY promises to be an up and coming girl band to watch.

JOSY will be opening for Mo’some Tonebender on the Las Vegas, Las Angeles, and San Fransisco dates at Japan Nite this year.

EMPTY

March 1, 2011

myspace band of the week

It’s March. I was going to take the time to highlight some Japan Nite/SXSW bands, but then Across The Pop Records uploaded three new videos from this awesome new ska band last night.

EMPTY hails from Kanagawa Prefecture. The band formed in 2005 while they were still in high school. Last year they made their debut on Across The Pop with the Across the Pop e.p and a sold out 7″. Their first album So What? comes out March 16.

Most of the songs on EMPTY’s myspace are from the Across the Pop e.p. “Lucy” is the most laid back of these. A nice, catchy love song. The rest are fast tunes. “Empty” employs some classic punk screaming early on while new track 忍び足 waits until the end. ちがう takes it’s half-minute runtime to wallow on in trumpet heaven. Of the three new PVs, “New Wave” and “R.T.P.” are similar in style to their e.p. “Aoi” takes a more jazzy route. It’s good to see EMPTY mix up fun, fast ska with more classy tunes.

Buy EMPTY music products at CD Japan.

cero

February 22, 2011

myspace band of the week

cero (Contemporary Exotica Rock Orchestra) is an experimental pop band with roots in folk and funk. They formed in 2004 playing mainly in bars. They recorded two demo CDs and appeared on a few compilations, including a Haruomi Hosono (Yellow Magic Orchestra) tribute. Their first full-length World Record was released a few weeks ago.

The only thing available on cero’s myspace page is an album digest for World Record, which was uploaded last May even though the album just came out. But you can listen to the entire album elsewhere on myspace for free. It’s just listed under the myspace page of the Spanish rapper of the same name.

I first heard of cero when I posted the chill-out “Daiteiden No Yoruni” on J-Rock Fridays. But there’s actually a fair bit of happy-go-lucky songs here, with a lot of songs featuring marimba, vibraphone, accordion and harmonica. “Nizyuuiseeikino Hiderinomiyakoni Amegafuru,” which sounds like a trolly car ride, is my favorite of those. It’s also fun hearing the vocalist experiment with hip hop on “exotic penguin night” and “World Record.” Another standout “(I found it) Black Beard” is just one big island party.

Then there are the songs that return to the soft-rock formula such as “outdoors” and “Anonoka,” which ends in a pretty epic drone out. They balance the album out nicely. It’s the contrast between the beautiful melodies and fun that make cero a standout indie pop band.

Buy World Record at CD Japan. Download at Amazon.com and HearJapan.

Sorrys!

February 15, 2011

myspace band of the week

Sorrys! is a 3-piece indie rock band from Koenji. They formed in 2006 with vocalist Kikuta and drummer Teppei. Bassist MKT joined in 2008. They released their first mini-album Sou Ima Sugu, Sou Zenbu (So Right Now So Just All) February 2.

There’s a lot of praise heaped on Sorrys! myspace page from such bands as Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Analog Fish. And it seems like Sorrys! learned a lot  indie rock mentors. They put up Sou Ima Sugu, Sou Zenbu in its entirety  on myspace. Vocals are loud and proud with a slight rap edge in “satisfAction” and “ONE 2 People” and there’s a cool fire siren in “Bet It.” Things gets a little more mellow in 僕らが今日も探し逃がしてしまうもの and ジャンボ, though. There’s also a demo for “Royal Straight TEENAGE flash” that’s a bit more playful than the rest of these songs. Sorrys! is off to a good start.

Buy Sou Ima Sugu, Sou Zenbu at CD Japan or download it for $6 at Amazon.com.
